Liquid Journey VIII
Intensive 2, 27.7.+28.7.2024, 11:00–17:00, Arsenal H
Vienna’s geological bedrock consists of rocks that date back to a time when Vienna was still a sea. A sea that became a lake, which then dried up and was finally covered by the sediments of the Danube and the Vienna Woods. The traces of this primeval sea can still be found everywhere. In the city as it has grown and also in our bodies in a sympoetic relationship to the environment.
Inspired by hydrofeminism, Liquid Journey VI explores our physical relationship to water and to ourselves. Body fluids nourish us, they detoxify and shape transitions, they initiate and accompany the change between different sensations and feelings. This workshop also explores the transformative quality of liquids, as well as their lightness and power. Our dances will dive into their waves, their pulsation, their tides and connect with their freedom and the moods they bring. We will also practise poetic mindfulness towards ourselves and the cultural nature of which we are a part and which we will also explore in this workshop.

~abun~dance
29.7.–2.8.2024, 09:30–11:30 Arsenal C
In ~abun~dance~ yoga & dance meet and are dedicated to the revitalising qualities of water in our bodies and on our planet.
All expressions of water on our earth can be found in the body. There is the great unbound ocean of fluids in which all cells are bathed and rivers & streams that flow in the vessels of the veins, arteries, lymph and brain. The wave of breath connects us to the permeability and suppleness of water. This not only stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation, but also the flow of energy, which contributes to greater vitality and joie de vivre.
Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga supports our inner fire and mindfulness. We stretch, strengthen and relax. When light meets water, the result is a dancing, exhilarating sparkle. We are on the trail of this glow with every breath. We strengthen joy and set it in motion so that it accompanies us through stressful and difficult times.
~abun~dance~ practises mindful devotion without losing oneself. The focus is on the simple flexibility of the body. Through small changes, tips and tricks, everyone will find their own personal way to hold positions (asanas) and immerse themselves in their dance.

The fragile state of the earth, the immense consumption of resources in some parts of the planet and the resulting climate change ask for expanded narratives on how we can deal with this existential threat to our common living conditions.
which dances – which writes. Aluminium Assemblages brings together contributions dedicated to the resistant practice of wanting to tell new stories in dark times. The texts explore the glittering, reflective, high-energy, poisonously luxurious compounds of aluminium. Aluminium is the metal most commonly found on earth. It is impossible to imagine our everyday life without it, but at the same time the production of aluminium is tremendously energy-intensive and the red sludge produced during its production is highly toxic. which dances – which writes. Aluminium Assemblages describes an artistic research of a choreographic assemblage. In the contributions to the volume, the production and consumption of aluminium are recycled in a poetic, reflective way in order to give the interwoven co-existence of the human and the non-human new assemblages, assemblages, in language.

13th – 17th of May, 11:30 – 13:30: Morning Practice @ TQW Vienna
Our bodies contain all the expressions of water on earth. Inside us is a vast ocean of fluids in which all our cells are immersed, along with rivers and streams that run through our veins, arteries, lymph and brain vessels. We will focus on the different streams of sensation and tension, and the fluid transitions of movement, voice, and text that we experience as dance. With our eyes closed, we will explore the intricate details that nourish our presence by diving into the micropolitics of our bodies. We surrender to multi-layered, simultaneous meanings as if our dances emerge from our dreams. Our skin helps us to listen, and we give space and time to play. Rhythm and tempo tell stories of joy and sorrow as we move fluidly between blurs and instincts, gentleness and wildness. We allow places to bubble up with light and laughter through the words of our breath.
14. und 16. Mai, 14:00 – 17:00: Liquid Journey VII @ TQW Vienna
Exploring the transformative qualities of water in the urban space along the Danube Canal, our dances come into contact with the waves and the pulsation. which dances – or how to imagine a future beyond extraction is a choreographic assemblage and spatial setting to explore the materiality, production and waste of aluminum. Hissing sounds, twinkling lights and weightless movement appreciate the beauty of the material, the intelligence of the soil and the earth from which it comes. They say metal has no memory. If it did, what would aluminum tell us? Would it tell us that bauxite mining is affecting the lives and livelihoods of surrounding communities through its impact on air and water quality, agriculture and ecology? Would it tell us about the destruction of the last remaining natural areas in remote parts of the world? Would it ask us why at the same time huge amounts of energy are being used to produce a metal that only enables some economies to grow and modernize, requiring even more energy and resources?
Would it ask us whether we can imagine sustainable consumption and develop a different understanding of happiness and fulfillment in order to give our lives together a different direction?
which dances – or how to imagine a future beyond extraction invites you to engage with these questions through an exhibition / assemblage, a film screening, a workshop and a performance & book presentation.
April 9 – 14, 2024, daily 10:00 – 17:00, exhibition / assemblage which dances – or how to imagine a future beyond extraction
April 12, 2024, 18:00 Feature & documentary: Fly me to the moon by Esther Figueroa (English).
The film accompanies aluminum around the world and into space. We encounter technical innovations, numerous wars, social upheavals and environmental destruction. In the here and now of the climate crisis, it challenges us to think about the consequences of our consumption and to change our material culture and political economy. Winner of the Awareness Festival Merit Award 2019.
Afterwards: Activation of the space and informal exchange with drinks.
April 13, 2024, 14:00 – 17:00 Workshop: which dances – or how to imagine a future beyond extraction. We are in search of other micropolitics & perceptions. Landscapes are bodies; they condense time. By exploiting them, they become like flesh around ghostly voids.
They ask: How can we live a life in the Anthropocene and beyond? How can we come to terms with the challenges of capitalism and extraction and imagine a sustainable future together? With: Esther Figueroa (tbc), Sabina Holzer, Kilian Jörg, Stefan Pogatscher (tbc).
April 14, 2024, 18:00 Performance & book presentation: which zones by & with Aluminium (artistic direction), Sabina Holzer (material, choreography & performance), Elisabeth Schäfer (text & performance), Jack Hauser (scenography), Thomas Wagensommerer (sound material), Alix Eynaudi (choreographic accompaniment), Brigitte Wilfing (compositional accompaniment),

testing grounds

With her artistic oeuvre and curatorial practice, Katrin Hornek playfully engages with the strange paradoxes of living in the age of the Anthropocene, that is, the new geologic epoch where the effects of capitalism, colonialism, and extractivism are written into the body of the earth. She asserts a more complex understanding of the entwinement of so-called nature and culture that recognizes that our bodies and cultures are substantially and spiritually connected with other creatures and the elements that make up our world. As an artistic strategy, Hornek follows the stories and traces of the material world into their countless networks to create narratives.

As an artistic strategy, Hornek follows the stories and traces of the material world into their countless networks to create narratives.
testing grounds is a new, immersive live installation conceived by Katrin Hornek and developed in a collaborative, body-based process involving artists as well as researchers and scientists from different fields. The collaboration with Karin Pauer, Sabina Holzer, and Zosia Hołubowska lays a foundation for the work, which addresses a sensitive urgent matter: At stake is the measurable evidence of radioactive radiation around the world as a result of the testing and use of nuclear weapons in hundreds of above-ground tests since 1945. A local soil sample in which radioactivity was measured as its starting point, testing grounds follows the permanent imprints left by the so-called nuclear fallout in our bodies, in plants and earth archives.
Embedded in an installation that evokes images of decaying landscapes, twice a week three dancers perform a score choreographed by Pauer. Texts created by Sabina Holzer and Katrin Hornek provide multi-layered narratives on the subject matter, which enter a subtle, intimate dialogue with specially composed soundscapes by Zosia Hołubowska, while with their movements, the dancers delve into the depths of body archives. Together, the elements of the live installation create a sensual, immersive experience, a test set-up of the embodiment of the unspeakable.
The exhibition is accompanied by a publication with essays by Anne Faucheret and Brian Holmes and contributions by the participating artists.
